Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health’s (D-HH) Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine is pleased to host a two-part session focused on the technology, safety, and efficacy of mRNA COVID vaccines and the state’s and D-HH’s distribution and allocation plans.

On Friday, December 18th, Kathryn Stephenson, MD, MPH, the Director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the Harvard Center for Virology and Vaccine Research and an infectious disease physician, will discuss the biologic basis of COVID vaccine development, as well as the clinical trials process. She will also address concerns about the rigors of testing and the likelihood of sustained immunity in addition to potential complications.

On Monday, December 21st, two of D-HH’s own infectious disease doctors will discuss the impact of the vaccines on public health, as well as key logistics. Elizabeth Talbot, MD, the NH state deputy epidemiologist, will address topics including the state’s allocation and distribution plans, as well as the ethics involved in a limited supply vaccine. Michael Calderwood, MD, MPH, Associate Chief Quality Officer at D-HH, will speak to the role the system will play in vaccination for those working within the health system, as well as in the community. He will also address ongoing important public safety measures in the COVID pandemic.

Laura Chiang, MD, will moderate both sessions. Dr. Chiang is the Vice Chair for Education in the Department of Anesthesiology and the Co-Medical Director of the Surgical Intensive Care Unit.

All participants are also strongly encouraged to watch Dr. Calderwood’s video on commonly asked vaccine questions on the Dartmouth-Hitchcock YouTube channel.
