• Sketch paper (copy paper is excellent)
• Several sheets of large drawing paper
• Drawing pencils (having about 5 different hardnesses to choose from)
o very hard/light gray, hard/gray, medium (#2), soft/black, very soft/very black
• Optional: pastels, charcoal, colored pencil etc
• Ruler or straight-edge
• Eraser
• Drawing board (a stiff board larger than your paper)
• Set up a simple still life with objects that won’t be disturbed while you’re drawing:
o no more than five objects
o simple shapes are best for beginners – (for example, a book, apple, box, plate, and mug)
o place your still life straight ahead of your drawing table at least 4 feet away
